We have officially left our church of the past 5yrs. After the pastor retired, its just not been the same and we've realized that the 'denomination' is only loosely connected with LOTS of differences and with each change of pastor you get new ideas/new theology/new interpretations. Poor Martin Luther, if he came back today he'd only shake his head in dismay.

We are 'exploring' the Ancient Faith (check out this internet radio site with free radio shows http://ancientfaith.com/ ) dh is more on board than I am. I think we've found a safe place for now. I still have to get the priest to guarantee he will not tinker with the services. Looking forward to Advent.

(((Briva))) It can be hard to leave a church.

In our diocese, the priests are sent the liturgics for each week by the bishop (and they're based on what the church as a whole is doing). They can't change which readings to do, or which troparia to sing, or which saints to commemorate. There is SOME leeway with the homily, but most priests I know formulate the homily based on the ancient teachings of the church -- there's not any kind of "this is what this means to me" type of message given.

Advent begins Nov. 15! It's almost here! :)

Not much need to worry about tinkering, Briva : )

We have a joke:
Q: How many Orthodox Christians does it take to change a lightbulb?
A: CHANGE?!

If there's anything I can do to help you with the transition (in addition to praying) please let me know.

Delighted to hear you're trying it out : )
