Absolutely right, Linda. We try to minimize it, but haven't managed to escape it yet.

The applesauce works great for baking, the items are still nice and moist.

Ah, baking isn't my problem. Greek food has traditional vegetable dishes get a substantial amount of their flavour from Virgin Olive Oil. I can minimize that, but can't get rid of it entirely without ruining the traditional character of the dish.

I use organic extra virgin olive oil, mostly for baking. I do not use it for frying because it does not have a high smoke point. For frying I use organic virgin coconut oil. I am not a huge fan of coconut, but have found I really like the light taste of Nutiva brand. I also use coconut oil for making homemade deodorant, in place of butter (cookies and such), in pizza dough, popping popcorn, and pretty much everything because it is so healthy. It's also great for oil pulling.

TDK, we use it for oil pulling as well.
For those who don't know what oil pulling is, here is a link:

Would LOVE the link for the SPanish Extra Virgin Olive Oil. How long does this last your family of 3? Just curious, since there are 3 of us now. We purchase our Olive Oil at Costco for a 1/2 gallon, but it is $20 something for each bottle. Need to check on the stability of Olive oil before it goes rancid, since we've never purchased large quantities of it. That's my only concern in buying so much at a time.

It seems like I read somewhere - a looooong time ago - that breaking open a vitamin E capsule into a bottle of olive oil will either keep it from going rancid, or slow down the process. For a half gallon you may need more than one capsule.
I cannot remember where I read this information! :D

Yes - vitamin E is a natural preservative, and is often added to natural cosmetics to preserve the oils in them. It makes sense. Now, I *don't* know if cooking vitamin E oil is a good idea or not - it *should* be okay, but I just don't know.

BTW - Oil pulling wouldn't be for me! just reading about it makes me turn green!

I would think cooking with oil that had a capsule of Vitamin E added to it would be ok, since the amount of Vitamin E is so small, compared to the entire bottle of oil.

LOL about the oil-pulling! That is a new idea for me!!!  I don't know if I could hold a spoonful of oil in my mouth for 15 minutes...that's a long time!!!

I set a timer and go about my usual tasks while swishing the oil around in my mouth. Time is up before I even realize!

tkdmom & Cindy,

Would you mind sharing what kind of conditions and results you've had with oil pulling; I'm seriously considering doing it.
