DIL recently taught DD to crochet a chain. When we got home, she wanted to learn more about crochet - so I bought 2 needles & 2 skeins of yarn (different colors) and we've BOTH been trying to learn. Pretty fun so far : )
This was our first instructional video:

Do any of y'all crochet? :)

Needles aren't the right thing?! Maybe that's why I'm having so much trouble! :? ;)

Seriously, tho, I notice myself using the wrong word more and more often. I wonder if there's something wrong with my brain - like a small TIA or two? :geek:

In any case, glad that you crochet, too : )

No crocheting or knitting for me but now that my children are grown, I'm trying out some crafty-type activities. A local shop that features homemade products by local artists offers classes in soap making, bath bomb making, painting. and pottery. They're Christians and support local human trafficking organizations with a small percentage of the profits, so it's a win-win for me! I've also repainted several chairs, plant pots, and a plant stand recently. So like you said, Anna, it's never to late to learn!! Enjoy your 'creations,' ladies!

That sounds great, Patrice!!! Back when they offered those things in our area i didn't have the time to go. Seems like the things i put off thinking i'd do them "later" just aren't happening these days. Being able to support that kind of ministry along with it is icing on the cake!

That sounds really fun, Patrice : ) I read a book on soap making once, but never got up the courage to work with lye. I think it's a fascinating life skill : )

BTW - glad to have you here! I can't recall if we've "met" before, but I'm delighted to "see a new face" :D

Anna, that is a great video! Now I know why I do not like Boye brand hooks. I crochet different and like a brand called Susan Bates. The hook is shaped different.

I was eleven when my great aunt taught me the basics. I bought a I Taught Myself How to Crochet kit in my twenties. I learned how to make hats, mittens, scarves and a basic sweater. The secret is learning to read a pattern. Once you know that, anything is possible. That's what the kit does. I make baby layettes for charity (blanket, hat, booties), hats (kids, seniors and cancer caps), and belong to a chapter of projectlinus.org

Blankets are easy, and they make wonderful gifts for babies.

A year and a half ago I bought a I Taught Myself to Knit kit 8-) I started a hat, actually torn apart and have started several times. I don't get the needles, must be a coordination thing. Maybe one day I will actually finish it.

That sounds really cool, Briva : )

I have Boye brand hooks (I don't know the difference!) because that is the kind that DIL uses : )

I was kinda ruined for knitting when my Mom bought a knitting machine, and I could see how fast the machine could do HOURS worth of hand work! But, somehow, I'm enjoying crochet so far. But, DD has asked me to wait till she catches up with me, skill-wise : ) I was practicing while she was doing her lessons, and as she accurately says, she doesn't have much time to work on it. Maybe we'll start school with a short crochet practice in the AM : )

If you find cool, free online patterns, please share!

I found this one a while back - and I aspire to one day have enuf skill to make it : )

Great! Hmmmm. Making me want to make one! I find the trick to crochet, knitting and many other handcrafts is the COUNTING! Many patterns rely on keeping track of how many stitches you make so you can go into them again in a specific pattern. I tend to add or lose stitches along the way so learn early to keep track.
