In my Spanish lesson it has "gaseosas" for soft drinks. Is that the common usage? Also, bizcocho de chocolate for chocolate cake?

We call sodas, sodas or refrescos. I guess gaseosas is the official term, like saying, 'give me a carbonated drink'.

Bizcocho is Spain/Spanish. I know in Mexico and a few Latin American countries 'cake' is 'pastel' (pause-tell)
