I was reading about men being shot for cowardice during WWI. It made me wonder about the families. No matter the circumstances and reason for the supposed "cowardice", it would be a dreadful thing to have people "know" that this happened in your family. It seems it would be very similar to the stain of suicide.
No matter how we really feel about it, each circumstance taken in consideration, there is still that stigma attached to both.
Just thinking "out loud", i suppose.

They're both a great tragedy for the family.
I don't think American soldiers were executed for cowardice - but British soldiers were. When you're part of a unit, refusal to do your part can result in the death and/or capture of your comrades - or of your entire unit I suppose that's why penalties were so harsh. Not something I would choose. I struggle with the concept of the draft in any form - much less with a death penalty attached.
Suicide is sometimes done with the express intention of hurting one's family : ( Making it that much more painful for the survivors. And making them need compassion that much more.
How much sadness is in this world : (

Some suicides are because the person actually believes the world (and their families) will be better off without them.
Shooting a coward I guess was supposed to scare them enough to force the soldier to not be a coward? Don't think it would work... But thankfully by the grace of God I've never had to face that kind of decision.
