I agree with him that whole foods are good & chemicals & excess sugars are bad.

But, some of his other ideas - not so much.

His premise that Americans are eating a lower fat diet now than in years past is flawed. And, he is using his book to sell a supplement that he makes - which makes me question his objectivity. And, there is no mention (in the article, or in my quick browse of his book on Amazon) of any studies he's done to demonstrate whether his theories are actually effective.

I had to go back and re-read. I'll "take notes" this time:

>>we opinion makers insisted heart disease resulted from the simple fact of elevated blood cholesterol.
<<I've believed for many years that cholesterol is not the indicator we're told it is. Dh's cholesterol was fine when he had his heart attack. I believe a better indicator is probably homocysteines but they won't test for that as it's expensive.

>>>The only accepted therapy was prescribing medications to lower cholesterol and a diet that severely restricted fat intake.
<<<I believe this was/is true of the American Heart Association. Many heart doctors have discovered it doesn't work and they have tried other methods, even going so far as Atkin's.

>>> inflammation in the artery wall is the real cause of heart disease
<<<We're hearing this more and more. It was in our nutrition class last spring.

>>>The long-established dietary recommendations have created epidemics of obesity and diabetes,
<<<Well, this is hard to argue with unless you take into consideration that very few people actually EAT the way it's recommended to eat. ;-)

>>>Simply stated, without inflammation being present in the body, there is no way that cholesterol would accumulate in the wall of the blood vessel and cause heart disease and strokes. Without inflammation, cholesterol would move freely throughout the body as nature intended. It is inflammation that causes cholesterol to become trapped.
<<<This is the statement that I find intriguing.

>>>What are the biggest culprits of chronic inflammation? Quite simply, they are the overload of simple, highly processed carbohydrates (sugar, flourand all the products made from them) and the excess consumption of omega-6 vegetable oils like soybean, corn and sunflower that are found in many processed foods.
<<<Don't we all agree with this?

All I have time for at the moment.

Anna, what exactly are you not agreeing with?

By arguing that Americans are eating lower fat diets now (not true) and having more heart diesase (true), he is implying that a low fat diet causes heart disease. And, he can fix it with the supplement he sells.

There is a huge amount of evidence (Campbell, Esselstyn, Ornish, McDougall, Framingham heart study) for what he is arguing doesn't work. While he is citing no studies for what he says does work - and he stands to make a profit off of it. The money wouldn't bother me, but bad advice here kills people.

I see what you're saying about the fat. I take away from it more about the processed foods and oils we've been told are good. I didn't see that about his supplements. I don't see his advice as bad. If you get that you should eat a lot of fats, I suppose that would be bad.

He says: Foods loaded with sugars and simple carbohydrates, or processed withomega-6 oils for long shelf life have been the mainstay of the American diet for six decades.

Me, too! I'm a big fan of nearly all things sweet, but have never liked twinkies - not even when I was little and liked such delights as potted meat and hot dogs! The fact they're made with tallow is a big turnoff to me, too!

People may be eating a better diet, no fats, oils that clog arteries, but they are still fat, to me because of PORTION control.
