We have spent a couple of HOURS talking to our grandson (9yo) about WHY he was not allowed to go with his Aunt instead of going to church. We would like, but cannot insist, everybody in this house to go to church sunday mornings and wednesday evenings. That's about 3 hours a WEEK of church. We feel it can be worked around almost always.

It has always been a house rule however my mom doesn't go on wednesdays and so far, the new inmate (oldest dd) hasn't made it a priority.

Tonight at church somebody else said THEY wouldn't be at church sunday, kind of giggling about "breaking the sabbath" this week. Felt a bit undermined.

I am tired, too, and that doesn't help. Sometimes i feel like throwing up... my hands. :P

My kids act like a couple hours a week at church, is like being sentenced to life in prison.

And to think of what Christ gave up for us. We set aside one measly day to worship, when we could be there 24/7. Isn't He there for us?

He came up with so many "reasons" that it would be ok to miss church "this once". He doesn't even go to church when he's at home. I asked him why he would give up an opportunity to go to church to do something that could be done another time. He bro't up the one time he and Grandpa helped a friend move. They left on wednesday nite and missed church. :?

It's MUCH harder when it's not your OWN kid you're dealing with!

With DD, when she argues, I simply say, "This is not up for discussion."

But, she never argues about Church, thank God - partly because our life is not very entertaining (we do many fun things, but no Tv, video games) so Church looks pretty fun to her ; )

I'll have to admit that "It's not up for discussion" was an option for me. I just wanted to hear how his brain worked. He was definitely up for debating but his arguments lacked substance.

There are two basic kinds of arguments with kids IMO (assuming it's not an angry argument
1) to understand each other's perspective
2) to wear the adult down & get one's way

I try not to indulge type #2 ; )

Same here! My dc saw church as a fun place to go after being cooped up at home. (not that we didn't do things, but homeschooling didn't get done if we were gone all the time, so outings were limited.)

This may have more of the 2nd from his viewpoint. It was a good exercise in debating tho'. :)

Well, once in a while isn't likely to do much harm - as long as it's not a habit. :)
