We're thinking about putting a bathtub downstairs. We've also talked about showers without a door. I went looking around and came up with some things that look intriguing but are they affordable? Practical? Easy to clean? I'd say no or they would be more mainstream! ???

Sorry it's so ginormous!!! How do you shrink it?

They are hard to clean because soap scum gets settlef into all tjose little cornets, nooks, and crannies.

I like simple. I learned that from my mom. It's not that she was lazy and hated to clean, but she liked it when cleaning was easy. They bought a home with an ornate textured linoleum. Grrrr. Saw her on her hands and knees scrubbing because, like Tory said, the nooks and crannies trapped gunk. Dad finally put in plain ceramic tile. She also hated knick knacks. She said they just collected dust.

A door-less shower would be LESS to clean.

Not in my experience. There isn't a door, but a narrow entry, and that means another full wall catching water and soap and dirt. They are usually made with tile. Tiles catch gunk in each little space between them. All that grout! Ugh... And the tiles themselves. Also, they tend to have built in recesses for holding soap and shampoo bottles. Those also catch scum which must be cleaned "often" or else the build-up is a bear to clean.

Also, just as a caution if you do get one, thry tend to be bery slippery when wet so you'll need either texture floor built in, or add a bathmat.
Both add to the cleaning chore after a while.

My shower stall looks like this one, except it does not have the seat. A spritz of comet bathroom cleaner (citric acid based) keeps it clean. The hall bath has a one piece, smooth molded tub/surround. No crevices. I loved them. They came with the house.

Mine is similar to Briva's. It's the size of a regular tub but is just a walk in shower. Mine has a small seat on just one end, no grasp bar, and the sides are all smooth fiberglass, no tile look like this photo. I just use a fabric shower curtain that i can wash in bleach as needed. On the shower itself I use a mix of Dawn and vinegar and that gets soap scum off. Other bath has the same style but with a tub for the kids. All one piece, no crevices. I really dislike real tile. Like Tory said very slippery when wet and a pain to clean. After I had it once I swore I'd do my best to never have it again! We have put some groutable vinyl tile in laundry room and are really pleased with those.
