http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504763_162- ... aspergers/

Summary: there are diagnostic changes coming for autism spectrum disorders. 65% of the kids who now have Aspergers will not qualify for any special services or any diagnosis at all. The remainder will be re-classified as Autistic. (This is old news, but perhaps not everyone has heard it)

A friend who is a professional in this field told me about it.

Having worked with children labeled autistic, and children and adults labeled Aspergers, I have to say THERE ARE SOME FUNDAMENTAL DIFFERENCES. Related yes, similarities, yes. But not the same. I have talked with professionals that think Aspergers should be in a different category because of that.

"He says the new definition will end the skyrocketing autism rates."

Well, yes and no. It won't END the rate of autism but it WILL end the LOOK of it.

I agree that Asperger's and Autism are two different things, similar in many ways, but different just the same. There will remain a need for services for those with Asperger's just as there will be a need for services for Autism.

I agree Sis, that it will not end the autism rates though. I truly believe that Autism has environmental/immunization factors and until we change the way we do things we will continue to have these issues.
