I started homeschooling when my oldest was halfway through first grade. I was separating from the military and we were moving to a different state, so that was all I told his teacher/school.
I don't remember really having a talk with the kids about it, we just moved and took the rest of the school year to decompress. We went on a lot of walks, did AWANA, and went to the local homeschool park day. That was about it for planned activities. The kids did a LOT of playing outside, either by themselves in the backyard, or out front with the neighbor kids when they got home from school. After only getting one or two 15 minute recesses a day in school, ds had a blast just being able to play. When we started doing school, I just kept it light and "threw" some school at him whenever I could get him inside. It was very laid back.
