The more I homeschool, the more acutely aware I become of how lacking my Math education was.

We spent some hideous amount of time being tortured by Long Division, but Short Division was only reviewed very briefly. As a result, I forgot nearly all about it. I was thinking it was just simple division without a remainder (like 21/7 for example).

Finally I googled it, and read a summary of it. It is very easy and pretty fun (compared to that horrible "long" stuff!) DD is doing much better using it, too. Any other fans out there? Am I the ONLY one who was more or less oblivious to this method?

What?! I don't think I've ever seen it before. I'm gonna have to play with it and see what I think. I HATED "long" division and my dad told the teacher he did NOT want me learning it. "Regular" division was ok and I always assumed it WAS "short" division. Hmmm. How did you happen across it?

What?! I've been cheated! I just googled it and I've never ever seen that before! I always just thought using short division was using a calculator, lol. I did do well in long division in school, but I felt clueless when Christian started doing division and had to start looking up answers in the teacher's guide.

I very vaguely remember it being mentioned in grade school. And, I figured if Long Division was "long" there MUST be a "short" form (opposites, and all ; )

It is SO much easier to do it this way!

I SO resent being taught "New Math" to the exclusion of all competency in the subject!

I'm actually loving math now that I'm learning it to teach DD - and I always hated it before!

BTW - I asked DH what was taught in Europe when he was a kid - it was a little different style than ours, but "short" not "long" - no wonder the rest of the world does so much better at Math than Americans do!
