I'm getting the Prek curriculum for Xavier and want to get him some of the hands on stuff, but they have a lot and that can get expensive. Has anyone used their hands on stuff and can recommend what's best. Also, I noticed a most of it focuses on uppercase letters, which I don't understand because you use lowercase more often, so I would think that would be first. I can't find their reason for that on the website. Anyone know? |

I found your answer on their site https://www.hwtears.com/hwt/why-it-works/teaching-order Have you considered just using their info, and making your own practice pages with Dry Erase materials? |

I used something similar to this with DD - as well as stencils that she could trace thru onto a dry-erase board. Both options are super cheap, and fun for little ones : ) In our case, DD was developmentally ready to learn to read YEARS ahead of when she had the fine motor skills to learn writing (contrary to popular wisdom) - so in our experience, either skill can come first : ) |

Thank you! I do think I want to buy the workbook, but I'm thinking about doing some of the hands on stuff myself. Like, the play doh thing. I really like the idea of having him roll play doh to form the capital letters, but why pay for their templates and stuff, when I can just create my own at home? So, I think I will do that for some of the hands on stuff. I just don't know about making my own practice pages. I think their books are designed by an occupational therapist and tell you the best way to do things, and with our family history of difficulties in this area, I want to give him the best start possible. I'm scared to do that on my own and "wing it". |

I can understand you worrying, Lisa ((Hugs)) But, when DD was little she had a speech issue, and someone suggested that I look on youtube for how to do therapy with her. Sure enuf, there were instructional videos on there explaining how therapists do speech therapy, and how to do it yourself! : ) (As it happened, the issue worked itself out in time, and I never needed to see if their instructions worked) You might also get their books on interlibrary loan thru your library, and see if you really need to make the big purchase, or if it is something you can do on your own. Even as we speak, I'm reading a book that I almost bought, but then decided to try it from the library first - and I'm not sure now that I will need to spend that money. |
