We did kind of what Pam did, we spent 3yrs studying American History along with geography, one in early elem, one each in middle school and high school. We always had maps out, a Fodor's Travel USA book and this one by Nelson Beecher Keyes, Historic Places in America http://www.abebooks.com/book-search/aut ... n-beecher/ it gave a story for each state. I wanted them to know what made each state unique, not just where it was or what's it capitol.
