I am just beginning "The Story of the World" by Susan Wise Bauer and came across a paragraph that I think displays how the opening paragraph of any new era or topic ought to begin! :)

It says "While Ieyasu Tokugawa was establishing his Shogunate in Japan, Henry Hudson was searching for the Northwest Passage in Canada, and the Jamestown colonists were struggling for survival in Virginia. And in England, a young man names William Bradford was making a difficult decision: to leave his home country forever."

Always connect history to events and people around the world. If it is old enough to be during the Bible times, Bible people and stories should ALWAYS be connected to secular history. I feel so strongly about this.

I agree. That's why we always use timelines when studying history. Then you can put it all together. :0)

That's why I love those Genevieve Foster books from Beautiful Feet books, The World of George Washington, etc (I see they have one I have not read, William Penn's World). It covers what was going on around the world during that person's lifetime.

I've been meaning to ask if anyone knows of any good pre-made timelines I can buy. I absolutely loathe making them and the kids have no interest in making them, either.

YES! This one:
http://www.amazon.com/The-Wall-Chart-Wo ... 076070970X

The Cross of Christ is prominently in the Center, and it starts with Adam and Eve - it also has info on dinosaurs, etc from a secular perspective in the side charts - something for everyone : )

It is truly spectacular!

Have you tried picture timelines? We used a few of these from http://bfbooks.com/Early-American-Histo ... egory=-119 but also printed out pictures like for US presidents
https://www.whitehouse.gov/1600/Presidents turning into a cut and paste craft.

Thank you, I will check these out! The only thing we have done is the timeline books from Sonlight, where you cut out the timeline figures and paste them in the book. This felt like drudgery to us and I didn't see any benefit for the kids because they just weren't interested in any of it and it wasn't helping them to retain anything or put it in perspective. We eventually just stopped doing them and I've felt guilty about it.

DD really enjoys getting out the 14 foot wall chart and stretching it across the floor to find where in history something is. I like that it gives a visual representation of time.
