Ok, so I'm 13 and I'm supposed to be in 7th grade, but I am 2-3 years behind in math! I am not even half way through the Delta book in Math U See. I'm so scared for my future. All my friends in my grade know so much more than I do. I try to tell my mom this but she thinks I'm just saying this because I have this one friend who kind of teases me about being homeschooled. Please help me, I am so scared.

Hi Ginger -- Get yourself an account on Khan Academy and start working diligently at it every day. Your math knowledge will come up to par in no time. It's about hard work though! There are no short cuts. :0) Good luck! Check back in and let us know how you are doing.

Try to stop comparing yourself to other people. You probably know a lot more than you realize! Also, some people excel in one subject but don't do so well in another subject, we are all different.

Stand up to your friend that teases you about being homeschooled. Research all the great people in history who NEVER went to a public school or private school. Educate yourself and be proud of who you are and how you are being educated. You are being given a unique childhood. Think of all the things you get to do because you don't go to school. If you don't have anything special that you do, then spend your free time pursuing your intersts instead of looking at what others may or may not know. Those "friends' probably secretly envy your life!! They tease you to make themselves feel better.

I agree with Martha who posted above that it will take hard work on your part to catch up if you want to. That is if you want to catch up to your friends... however I suspect there are topics you know a lot about that your friends don't! Math is only ONE part of life. You have many YEARS to learn all that you need to know. Even adults are always learning new things. Education is a life long journey.

I was in a very similar situation at your age. I was in 7th grade, doing 5th grade math in an un-accredited Christian school (this was before the days of homeschooling). Well, I transferred to a public school, thinking I'd be way behind. The new principal thought so too - and told my Mom he might have to set me back a grade or two after testing me. A month into school, Mom called to see when that test was going to be, and he replied - "She's at the top of her class! We're not going to bother with testing!" ; )

So, don't worry too much about being "behind" if you do "get" what you're working on.

On the other hand, the secret to better performance (at nearly anything) is more TIME spent on that subject. If you currently do math for 1/2 hour a day, move it up to an hour a day and your performance will *TAKE OFF!*

And, my Mom was a math teacher, and she always said that being *very * good at basic calculation was a huge secret to math excellence. In that spirit, sign on to "xtra math" every day - go back to addition - and do those facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication & division) till they say you're done. It only takes 5-10 minutes a day, and it will help you tremendously.

If you work on it, you WILL get better! The fact that you're on here, looking for answers, indicates that you have it in you to succeed! :D
