That is about life in the 20th century -- WWII or before. The only thing I found on a search was Summer of My German Soldier and it looks like it may have some inappropriate parts in it. Any ideas? |

I have read that book many times. I don't remember anything bad in it. I know she fell in love with a soldier but their relationship was one sided. Nothing happened between them. Her father was abusive and there was a few scenes where he said things to her, and once he beat her with a belt. The soldier was killed but it wasn't elaborated on in detail. Overall, it was one of my favorite books when I was a teen. There is also a movie. |

I also liked that book when I was young - I don't recall any inappropriate content - (my memory IS imperfect for such things) I liked F. Scott Fitzgerald as a teen - his work is all of the right era (there usually IS excessive drinking in his books) I'll keep thinking . . . |

The Chosen by Chaim Potok was and is one of my favorite novels. Definite exposure to another religion (Judaism) that *could* offend some parents, I suppose. It's blessedly short, but has some very deep concepts. |

The Chosen is one of my "chosen" books to keep on the shelves, as well. Depends on what you're looking for. Aren't a ton of the classics written about that period? Carry On, Mr Bowditch Little Women Johnny Tremain |

Found this online listing of historical fiction by time period, but I see most of the books are recently published, I do not know their content. http://www.historicalnovels.info/20th-Century.html This short list from bfbooks.com, The Endless Steppe by Esther Hautzig set in pre-WWII Russia; the House of Sixty Fathers by Meindert DeJong set in China during Japanese invasion; No Promises in the Wind by Irene Hunt set during the Great Depression (sounds like a better option than the Grapes of Wrath- that book still haunts me). Then there's To Kill a Mockingbird. Anne of Green Gables series is set in the early 1900's. Edited to add: there is a Young Adult page, might be better pickings http://www.historicalnovels.info/Young- ... ovels.html |

Leisha Kelly's series. The first book is Julia's Hope. My daughter read all 5(?) books and loved them. Not a fast-paced series, but sweet. There is real life situations and struggles (death, birth, drunkenness, joy, etc) but all set in the time frame you are looking for. Amy |
