Hi folks,

I am a new-to-homeschooling mom with 4 kids - ages 6,5, 3.5 & 18 mths.

We have been living in Cambodia for a year and in between language lessons and ministry, I have started to homeschool our two eldest children. My son went to public school for 2 months before we left Canada. He turned 5 shortly after we arrived and my daughter turned 4 shortly after we arrived thus I haven't been too concerned about following anything too strictly, especially because so much was happening in their/our lives at the time.

Now however, I need to be more organized and get a curriculum and do set times for things and I am feeling completely overwhelmed!! There are so many great resources but I don't even know where to begin.

I guess the first thing I need advice on is curriculum. I've been doing units and researching sites and getting ideas on pinterest and trying to find a comprehensive list of things each grade should know but it's exhausting!

I would like something that is faith based and interactive. I suspect different curriculums cater to different learning styles (???). We definitely prefer a hands on approach. Whichever we choose, it has to be easily accessible and cheap! I don't know how curriculums work but we really love to work on units and incorporate the different subjects into those units. I think ideally we would like a curriculum that has online resources (like media) so we can follow along without having to ship a bunch of DVD's or other materials overseas.

Secondly, I would so very much appreciate some links to resources. The sheer number of sites that come up when you google homeschooling resources overwhelms me completely! haha I've been pinteresting all kinds of things and printing them off but I'd love to find one or two sites that have a lot of worksheets (free!) so I don't have to bounce around all over the internet.

Ok, this ended up much longer than I planned but would really appreciate some input :D

http://fiveinarow.com/ This is my favorite curriculum for kids your ages. You do need something more to teach reading and math.

http://donnayoung.org/index.htm and https://www.khanacademy.org/ are resources that I used over the years.

I did not use these first two myself (the first came out after I finished the material it covers) but they look like they might fit what you're looking for
Both are free, all-in-one curricula for kids the age of yours

I second Khan academy, but it really starts a little older than what you're needing right now

I use/have used all of these, and they're great!
Starfall
Xtra math
and
IXL
are all great places to let your kids learn online - and all have free components.

I also make regular use of youtube. When DD was learning reading, I often looked up things like "Sh sound phonics" and could find a fun video for her to watch on the concept of the day.

Remember, learning the Cambodian language IS an academic subject- having them learn some with you would be a great use of their time, and might make it possible for you to focus better on your own studies.

Keep a log of what you do each day, so that when (and if) you return stateside, you can have whatever documentation you might need. I keep a log myself, and I find it very helpful to be able to look back and see what great video I found three weeks ago - or whatever.

It's been a long while since mine were young but I remember some small books by Ruth Beechik?? (pershaps someone with a better memory than I have will chime in here).
I believe it was a set of three little books, one Reading, one on Math... and something else... sigh. I sure wish I could remember!
But they were very helpful in explaining to me how to teach the younger children without a lot of bells and whistles of an expensive curriculum.

I also adore Charlotte Mason!

So Ruth Beechik (sp?) and Charlotte Mason are the two I recommend for elementary aged. Both are very hands-on and natural learning.

Welcome!
Five In a Row is wonderful! Also, check out HomeschoolChristian's page about how to homeschool early ages inexpensively:

Ambleside Online is another great resource. It has full guides for how to homeschool in a Charlotte Mason way.
