We use McGuffey Speller. We often find short words for which I know no definition. But, today we encountered Fuge. When I internet search it, all I can get are re-directs to Fugue - I'm fairly certain that they're not the same word, as Fuge has a cedilla under the g indicating a soft pronunciation - which it would not if it were the same word.
Does anyone know this word, or where I might find the definition (or, if it IS fugue, how it came to change both spelling & pronunciation?)
Thanks : )

Thanks for a great resource, Martha.
They didn't have my word *this time* but I imagine it will come in handy with future McGuffey words! It amazes me how many times I encounter a short word in there that I've never heard before!

The dictionary I'm using says:
-fuge (suff). One that expels or drives away. (<Latin, "fugare", to expel <"fuga", flight.)
This is from The American Heritage Dictionary, second college edition

Thanks, Tory : )
I JUST found that one, too, in our old dictionary in the basement. It *might* be what he meant - altho he *never* used suffixes for any of the other words, so I just wasn't sure it was right. I guess I'll have to accept it, tho ; )

You've got me curious now! I'll keep checking to see what else I can find out.
