We have searched for information on Physical education curriculum or requirements for Oklahoma Home School students and have been unsuccessful. We have recently opened an athletic facility and have had some calls about offering fitness/nutrition or speed/agility classes during the day for youth or teens that are home school students. We have some knowledge of the Texas Home School physical education but to our understanding it differs from Oklahoma. We would love to be able to offer and provide Home School students and parents a place to learn about fitness, sports, and nutrition. We feel it could be a great place for students to form teams and build a bond with other home school athletes and parents. Please give us some idea of where to get started or advice on finding more information. Thank You!

As an Oklahoma resident I wasn't aware that there was any requirement for PE. But when the kids were in the elementary years they played T-ball/Coach pitch on the town's teams and during the school year our local YMCA had classes so that they were able to participate with a group in the typical PE games. As my kids weren't sports inclined we didn't do anything formal for High School.

I don't know about Oklahoma, but from what I have seen of homeschooling parents, they tend to choose things for their children to do because they believe that those choices are good for their kids, rather than because of legal requirements.

In our state, I can technically "meet" the legal requirement to do phys ed very easily. I just have to do SOMETHING. I could have my daughter run in place for 5 minutes and do some jumping jacks and phys ed is "done."

But, I might CHOOSE something that she actually LIKES to do - that I think is good for her physically. In our case, we choose swimming & Greek folk dancing, among other things.

So, meeting the technical requirement of the law is almost a side note - if you create a good program and promote it well, the parents will see to the legal part (altho - it DOES help if you can reassure them how your program meets the law - so it is good that you're checking it out : )
