Someone on my local group was asking about which microscope to buy. I have NO idea what would make a good quality microscope. Can anyone give me some pointers? Thanks!

My mom got ds a Brock Magiscope and that thing is awesome. It is pretty much indestructible. We have all enjoyed looking at all kinds of things. Also the surface adapter lets you view even things you can't put on a slide. We keep it out and grab and look at all kinds of stuff. Ds isn't old enough to be using it for biology yet, but I have no doubt it will still be around when that time comes. They can sometimes be found used on eBay. There aren't really parts that can break like a typical microscope so I would have bought one used if I could have found one!

I'm not very experienced in the topic, but I think it depends very much on what you're going to use it for. I got a nice used one for $3.99 to introduce my little one to what microscopes do. It magnifies by 100x - which means she can see a thread or a feather real big - or a piece of sugar or sugar crystals. If you want one for medical research, they can actually be rented or leased. Ehow has articles on how to shop for one or rent one, but the goal of having one is, to me, the big question.

This seems to me to be a very well written article that gives a nice overview of buying considerations. this is a company that sells them, so take that into consideration when reading.
