So, here I am 4 years later (dd graduated in '09) working with a special needs boy of 8. I'm not getting much to go on from the official "teacher" right now, so I'm trying to prepare how to start:
1.) assessing his abilities/skills
2.) getting a direction for learning

I would like ideas for simple reading and math skills - I'm so out of the loop for resources, especially at the primary level.

Ideas and thoughts?

Hi Lorraine! Welcome back! Here are a couple places to start.

Make sure to read the vision issues page and others applicable to his diagnosis.

Great ideas here for free ways to homeschool young ones.

You didn't mention his special needs situation, but one thing that really helps in that area is hands-on activity. The more you can get him sorting and counting items, building with blocks, and talking about things he picks up around the yard, the better! Please let us have a little more info to help you!

Thanks Ladies - Martha, I'll check those out tomorrow! Appreciate you pointing me in the right direction. This little guy has epilepsy (started just after his 18 month vaccinations…!) He is 8. I'm supposed to start working with him Monday, but my father is about to die, so I may be delayed :-( Will be checking here, but if I'm gone for a bit, you'll know why!

Tory, thanks for the welcome back!!! :-)

Glad to see you again, Lorraine. I'm so sorry to learn about your dad. You are in prayers.

Sorry to hear about your Dad. Praying he has a peaceful passing, and you find comfort during this time.

Regarding the little guy, is he still having seizures? How has the epilepsy effected is cognitive abilities, if at all?

Hi Pam - yes he is. This is an area I am not familiar with and will get some information and tips from his mom tomorrow. The meds he gets make it worse and the diet they have him on is impossible - he now doesn't want to eat (don't blame him, it is SO restrictive) . I had heard that a ketogenic diet was good for this condition, but need to research this more.
