There are three letters my ds still does not form correctly: n's, m's, and f's. For n's and m's, he doesn't do the stem, just the humps. For f's, he does the line down first and then curves up (like an r) before crossing it. I keep insisting on him forming them right, but he's so set in his ways, I don't want to go through the trouble if I don't have to. Does this matter? It's still legible and it doesn't *seem* to affect his writing speed/fluency.

Personally, if it is legible, I let it go on letter forming : ) I just don't care about handwriting being an art. And, lets face it, other than grocery lists, in our culture we type most stuff anyway. (my dd made her f's like that for the longest time, she's just now switched after much practice)

The ONLY thing I'd worry about is that he's *capable* of forming them right (because he needs his brain to develop strong visual-spatial skills, and that's part of the *exercise* that will help it get stronger)

Anna's right. If he is having trouble forming the letter correctly, that is one thing. He might not be ready "maturity-wise" to complete these letters. I would wait and just watch. It might finally kick in, soon. In the meantime, you could have him practice with his finger drawing the letters in sand, salt, dirt, etc. Just don't force it for now.

Good, I will not worry about it then! He is able to write them correctly when I tell him to, he is just in the habit of doing it his way. When it comes to him and school, I want to pick my battles wisely and there are plenty of other battles that ARE important, like spacing in between words!

I used to let my dd's practice writing in a sugar coated dark jelly roll pan. They never wanted to stop, lol. Made it fun and sweet.

I suggest you keep on correcting him every now and then and then ultimately he'll get it right. Better this way than him making it a habit and going ahead with it all his life! Although I feel it doesn't matter much but still I would say have a go at it.
