We kinda do. We took today off just because I felt like it. But, last summer we went most of the summer. I call it "School Lite" in the summer - we do a lighter schedule & more fun stuff than in the winter. (I think it's fair to say I'm more of a drill sergeant than the average Mom here in the winter). If we need time off any time of year - we take a day or a week, but we haven't taken a full summer break yet. I think it helps a lot - largely because we'd be bored silly on a long summer break, and loose a lot of ground to boot.

I tried it one summer, a long time ago. It didn't work out. Too many of their friends that attended either public or private could not understand why we were still "schooling" in the summer. The doorbell kept ringing, the phones kept ringing. I gave up. We pretty much structure our times around the county schools just to keep sane. Now, my dd is almost 17 and attends the local community college as a middle school student. My son is in 8th grade, and is still "homeschooled."

I have in the past simply out of necessity. Too much laziness during the year led to us having to do things year round. Now that we're in Classical Conversations, our school is more structured and I love it. Gone are the days of having to feel like we're never escaping the books for a real summer.

We do some math and reading during the summer so the kids aren't rusty in the fall, when we start back full schedule.

I did with dd.
We would start when regular schools started, took a week off in between , we did 6 weeks and off a week, at Christmas, did not have the whole two three weeks off, too much time for her to not remember what she was taught.
We took some holidays off and ours would be maybe three days for Washington's birthday, two weeks for Thanksgiving, Two for Easter. During the summer did three weeks a month and had a week off. It all worked out.

We do. My dh has to bid for his time off in November for the following year. He gets 5 weeks off (a year) and it almost never falls during a time that 'worked' for me with doing school. So, I finally decided that it was silly not to schedule our school around his work, that and I was really resenting him being at home when I was trying to do school. Had to reevaluate my priorities. So, for example, he is off this week and next week. When he goes back to work and we resume school we only have 10 more days of school. Officially at least, with how many days we need for our state.

This is the first year we are doing this. She has finished all her work, so when we start up again in 2 weeks we will only do math and spelling through the summer. I thought this might be the easiest way to transition. We'll still take a week off here and there even is daddy isn't home. (I figured it out once and I it averaged out to do school for 5 weeks and off for a week to fill out the year). Then I will add the rest of her work in the fall.

I think that this way of doing school work better for life in general. I don't know about everyone else but if there is a sickness or some kind of family emergency, or a birth or whatever, I would still try to some how work in 'school'. I might have been kind of unschooling, but I would record it and everything. After a while I realized I was some kind of homeschool drill sergeant or something. I need to just let life happen.
