Saxon (new book), Teaching Textbooks, or MUS.

Saxon scares me because in years past it brought my dc to tears!

TT scares me because I hear it is proof heavy and hard to grade.

MUS scares me because it looks light and might not be enough to prepare for ACT.

So........tell me your experiences with either one of these. Or add something else to my list to decide from. :)

My dd used the MUS Geometry last summer. She has been attending a private school and finished ALG I for 9th but because of scheduling conflicts she couldnt take Geometry for 10th so she signed up for ALG II and did the Geometry during the summer. The video helped. She's had no problems with ALG II or tests, but then again, she is my math-smart kid. If need be she is planning to CBE the course for credit for her transcript.

I think the first thing you need to decide is if your child will learn better with a spiral approach or a mastery approach. TT is a spiral approach. My son used it and didn't retain anything. My kids preferred a mastery approach. My dd used MUS all the way through Pre-Calculus and didn't have any problems with the SAT but I can't speak for the ACT. If you use MUS you should also use their honor books. That gives them more word problems and more problems that make you think. My son liked the math books authored by Margaret Lial. They are will written with easy to understand directions and can practically be self taught. The nice thing about that author is that little has changed in her books over the years except for perhaps rearranging the order of things. This helps because it makes it possible to use old editions. When my son used them we used the 7th edition and payed about $30 for the student book, answer book and videos.
