I will be homeschooling my oldest grandson this fall. I am looking for something that will be all encompassing. We're seriously looking at Before Five In A Row but I am wondering exactly what a preschooler is needing. I can hardly remember when my kids were in preschool  We didn't started hsing until my youngest was in 2nd grade. Whether he goes to the p.s. or not for 1st grade is still being debated but I want all my grand kids to be on par or above the p.s. level.Thanks everyone! |

When I started schooling my youngest (now 15) I found this book by Ruth Beechick very helpful, it has ideas for story telling, math games, etc. all geared toward preK, K and 1st graders. http://www.mottmedia.com/pages/publicat ... ngChildren and since I was schooling my oldest dd as well, little one wanted to work in workbooks. I put these in page protectors so she could do them over and over again. Lots of tracing, learning A-B-C and 1-2-3, matching games, etc. cut and paste activities. I think they helped with her hand and eye coordination. These are Rod and Staff Preschool activity books, set of 4, http://www.rodandstaffbooks.com/item/39 ... _Preschool This is there bigger set (they have added more titles since my dd used them) Preschool, ABC series, comes with a Bible story book and matching coloring book http://www.rodandstaffbooks.com/item/1- ... _Preschool I discovered that what I taught my oldest dd to read with (AlphaPhonics) wasnt working with my youngest dd. Rod and Staff did have a stand-alone reading program that worked with her though, We Learn Letter Sounds. Their teacher's guide was very helpful. |

Play, play and more play. Preschoolers don't need anything to enhance their learning, other than an attentive adult who creates a creative environment and gives them lots of love. |

I don't use a packaged all-in-one curriculum myself, so I can't help with that. Although my ds was in public school for Kindergarten, he loved the Leap Frog dvd's for ABC's & numbers, easy math. |

I think preschoolers need lots of hands on manipulatives, readalouds, and opportunities for discovery! You Cannot read and cuddle too much either. When schooling the older kiddos, you'll need a plan and schedule for the youngest. First, it will keep them safe, second it will keep them engaged! Tell us a little about yourself : ) I know of NO advantages of putting a child in preschool over schooling them at home. ALL the "studies" I've seen are comparing formal preschool to child neglect (in which the parents did not teach the child at home AT ALL). Besides which, most such studies have biased funding - done by education departments of universities whose job it is to promote formal nursery/preschools. I haven't seen any studies done comparing homeschooling preschool to far away preschool - much less studies that don't have flagrantly biased funding/sponsors. Why do you ask? Do you have a young child? |
