What would you use to study government and civics without a textbook? I've thought of studying the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution, and The Federalist Papers. Can you think of anything else for national government? What would you use for state and local? Thanks!

Mom took us to see a murder trial in local court when I was a kid - that kind of thing is very helpful.

Volunteering at the board of Elections, or the Clerk of Courts office, or for a judge (if any of the above accept volunteers) would be a great education.

A visit to the state capitol, with tours of the legislative & executive & judicial buildings.

I just want to be able to figure out what is really going on in Congress and Senate. I guess what is reality in our government vs. what was intended for our government.

Oh, when I was a kid, we also went to watch congress in session, and went to watch the UN in session. (of course, that has to be worked into a family vacation)

We are lucky that we live close by to our state capitol. The Texas Home School Coalition sponsers Capitol Days http://www.thsc.org/ItemForm.aspx?Item= ... 40ff79ddd4

Usually it starts off with a picnic on the Capitol lawn followed by sessions with the legislators. They have a packet of information to be used by homeschoolers for the citizenship requirement. It involves getting involved. Get to know your councilmen, county commissioners, state and US congressmen. My oldest dd volunteered for a former Mayor in her bid for state comptroller (she won), then for a first time Rep. rep for our district (he won). We also volunteered for Victory 2000 (seems like eons ago in another world now). We got involved by getting to know our precinct chair.
