Just goes to show that time and interest makes a difference. Some people just are not ready to read when young, and when given the freedom to wait and relax, they do learn - in their perfect timing. Reluctant readers usually willingly read along the way if given the opportunity to read what is of interest to them. God is very good at giving us what we need/when we need it. It just is not always in the timeframes we want or think is "normal."

Some are just slow readers, like my son, while other students can have vision issues, like my daughter. My son reads fine, for the most part, despite his slow initiation to the fine art of reading. My daughter still struggles, but I was happy to hear she's making herself read the Lord of the Rings books, without any outside prompting and that made me really happy to hear that!
