I have a question regarding science and social studies. I have a child in 1st grade and the other is in 5th. I live in Tennessee. Do I have to follow a certain curriculum for science and social studies or could we just study what we want through the year? Just curious....What do you all do?

Welcome, Casee! Good to have you here : )

Each state has different laws for what you can and cannot do - above is the link from this site for state info for Tennessee.

I believe we have some folks on here who actually live in TN - hopefully they'll give you more personal info soon!

Again, Welcome!

you home school you can teach what you want. I did. I had done it for 18 yrs and do not see what difference it makes no matter what state you are in.

Just know what subjects the state requires and figure out how you want to present the information over the years. Unless your state has some really strict guidelines, you have a lot of freedom on what materials you use/don't use, in what grade/grades you present the information, how fast or slow you go through the material... Like Linda said, it is your "school" so you set your direction and have the options to change things up whenever and however you want. :)

Hi Casee! Welcome! At that age, pretty much anything you teach them on history and science will be more than they would have gotten in the public classroom. :0)

Hi Casee. I live in TN. No specific laws in regards to when and how to teach science.
