I'm looking for some interesting chapter books to read to Little One. I want to expand her comprehension - reading books that are a little above her reading level.

We're just finishing Flat Stanley, and she has *really* enjoyed it.

I came across the "Magic Treehouse" series - which looks interesting-, but it is modern -so I don't know how wholesome & Christian-friendly it is (or isn't). Does anyone out there know?

If you don't like this series, do you know any good little books about the same level as Flat Stanley that you *would* recommend?

To me, this series is one you will want to read beforehand. There are some that are good and some that are pretty iffy. They do tend to deal with mythological gods (IF I remember right). It's been awhile since I've read them.

Here's a website where you can read about them. http://www.magictreehouse.com/#about_the_series

Here's another link that shows some other children's literature choice:

When at the library today, I noticed that several of them have titles that looked inappropriate (spooky, scary, halloweeney).

I checked out a couple to see what I think - I think I WILL pre-read as you suggest, Sis : )

(Does anyone know if the Thankgiving one mentions God or pretends it was a Pagan holiday?)

I enjoyed reading them aloud when my oldest was little, but when I started them with my youngest a few months ago I really didn't enjoy them anymore. Some are definitely better than others.

A really good author to take a look at is Chuck Black. http://www.perfect-praise.com/ I have only read one book in the Kingdom series (the last book), but it is a "lighter" read than the Knights of Arrethtrae series. Girls will definitely enjoy the latter series because there are leading female characters. Each book (in both series) also has discussion questions for each chapter. They were a fave with my oldest.

We LOVE Magic Treehouse and I find them wholesome. There is not anything we have read so far that I wouldn't want my kids to know. We started reading them to our oldest in kindegarten and he is now in 2nd, reading them to us. They are obviously about magic, so for those who don't want their kids to learn about or pretend in those ways that could be a conflict. I teach my kids what is real and solid (the Lord) and what is pretend. There are so many lessons of kindness and some about sacrifice. Again we love them!

These are the books that got my ds's reading. I was very hesitant about them, but after reading some of them myself, I was ok with them.
My ds's were older, around 9.
In fact, they read everyone that the library had and asked for others for Christmas. They really enjoyed these books.

Thanks, Tory.

We are enjoying the one about Vikings : )

(I read them to her - she can read the words, but she's no where near being able to read so many pages at a sitting!)

The blog URL I posted above offers *very* helpful guidance on which ones are best.

The about the author at the back of the book says she's also written a book on world religions - Amazon raters say it's presents all the religions as equal. She is also a writer of books of Bible stories - and Greek Legends.

She DOES seem to be a very gifted story teller - *I'm* enjoying the Viking book, too : )
