Briva, your dice tip was *very* helpful - thanks! We didn't have any dice on hand, but had inherited a box of dominoes - which are fairly similar mathwise.

DD is LOVING the dominoes - and learning a lot from them. We make up games - like sorting out all the ones with sums of 0, then all with a sum of 1, then all with a sum of 2, etc. Or finding all the ones with a 3 on one end, and then putting the other end in order (3+1, 3+2, 3+3). She is getting much better number concepts and addition facts using them. They're one of the hightlights of her schoolday right now : )

Thanks for a great tip : )

let her do practice books. and her daily assignment. Sooner or later she may get burned out. You do not want that. Explain to her that doing more than a days assignment does not leave anything for the next day and you need to get your hours in.

sorry coming in so late but may I suggest something. MUS is a mastery program as you know. Going through all 6 pages in a day is rather fast. Have you been making her teach the concepts back to you. Many people don't realize that that is what Mr. Demme recommends the parent have the student do. It is a better indicator of the student grasping the concept. The worksheets are really just supposed to be reviews to help cement the concept. Many parents use the program wrong and down the road run into problems. I think the first thing you need to do is to make sure she really learned the concepts in the book. Go back and make her take all the unit tests and see if she can pass them with a 100 as that is what she should be able to do. If she can do that then she may just be good at math and I would see no trouble with starting her on the next book. If she starts slowing down don't worry at some point she's going to no matter what program you use. If she gets frustrated have her do a page of MUS a day and then add in all the other stuff. If she can't get a 100 on all the past tests then she hasn't mastered the material and you definitely need to slow her down and re do the book. Sometimes fast is rewarding for the student but might not be what's best and on the other hand some are just better learners and should be moved on as they can

There are no tests for the primer, but she did start doing the problems on her own. In fact, she's so stubborn, when she grasps something, she does it herself and won't allow me to help her, so I know she grasps it. I'm going to make her go slower with Alpha. She'll probably have to anyways. Right now she's using a math workbook I got from the thrift store, until I get the Alpha book.

Is she retaining info. It is not just get it done to be done, but keeping it in her head.

She seems to be retaining it, so far. She takes after her dad and seems to have unlimited storage in her brain, unlike myself and ds, lol.

If it were me I would tell my child math is not the only subject there is, have her practice writing. Explain that there are other subjects. She may very well get burned out on math when she will really need to be getting the concepts down and may not want to do it or fight you on it.

I would not try to "control" how much math or discourage her from doing math. If it's her thing, then it's her thing. I would encourage her to teach momma how to do it, since this is how the program is designed......but if she doesn't like that style then I would continue to allow her to do worksheets that she likes. You can create your own. :) Enjoy their desire to learn. It's priceless!
