She will finish her MUS Primer next week. She has been doing a full lesson (6 pgs) every day. I had planned on her starting this book in the fall for Kindergarten, so now I don't know what to do. I've thought about buying her some of those math workbooks from Walmart. She's really into workbooks. I think she MIGHT be able to start the MUS 1st grade Alpha workbook if we go really slow, but slow is not her pace. She will still want to be doing 6 pgs a day, so I am thinking about using the Alpha book at a slow pace and supplementing that with other cheap workbooks like the Walmart ones. I've evven thought of buying her another Primer and having her do that again, but I'm afraid she will find that boring and tedious, since she's already done it once. *sigh* What would you do? I don't want to spend a lot, since I hadn't budgeted in extra math for her.

She's turning out to be the same way with reading. Just learning to sound out small words and gets mad that she can't read the whole book!

If she loves the workbooks, then by all means let her have them for as long as she loves them. Perhaps add in games (board, card, computer) that play with math as well, if that would be of interest to her. The more she is successful and has fun, the more apt she will always enjoy math. That would be an amazing way to go through life. :)

I would not invest extra money in feeding this, unless I knew it was in what she truly enjoyed, and then only as much to fill the time frame that that particular approach continued to feed her interests. Let her lead you, and you will know how you can best support her joy of learning. :) You are doing fantastic.

I found this online resource a while back that *might* be great for your dd. (it's a little beyond mine at this point). http://www.softschools.com/

And, the free starfall math stuff is very fun. http://more2.starfall.com/m/math/add-su ... load.htm?f (the ones that aren't greyed out are free here)

That might feed her love of the subject without killing your budget.

Also, this isn't about math... but..
keep her supplied with plenty of blank paper and crayons, pencils, markers, colored pencils, etc.
For mine, I kept them in a small drawer thing we got from w*l mart. I had all colors of construction paper, plenty of scissors, glue, etc. (age appropriate).
The only rule was they had to work at the table only, and they had to clean up when done.
I tried to not ever complain about the amount of paper they'd go through, lol! TONS of paper, mostly blank.
This will encourage imagination, story writing, math problems, etc. that they can do on their own. You may not be able to understand much of what they make, but it'll be wonderful for them.

Here are some resources I had on hand for my lil dd. She learned to add and subtract before she could read. She just liked numbers better. Dont forget about manipulatives she could 'play' with to learn about sorting, sets, fractions...sort different types/colors of beans into small bowls (walmart sells plastic colored bowls for 4 for $1). I got lots of ideas from Ruth Beechicks' 3R's booklets - bonus, they come with a hundreds board (see down below) that I laminated.

Our daughter ended up finishing her kindergarten math materials in January. We started her on grade 1 a couple of weeks later (she had finished her reading and writing materials as well, so we moved on with those as well). We took her for a kindergarten "graduation" celebration at Chuck E. Cheese and she is halfway or more done with some of the grade one stuff (we are using A Beka math). We ordered the grade two material for her at our state homeschool convention (so we would get free shipping) so we have it on hand for when she finishes the grade one stuff.

The more we work with her the more we realize that our friends who are and have been public school teachers are right - you can get as much done in a couple of hours as they get done in a day or more. (we also don't take breaks nearly as long as the schools do, but then again we don't necessarily do school work every day)

Thanks for the resources! I will check them out.

Tory, that's a good idea about the art drawers. I have that same set up, but am still working on the cleaning up after themselves part, lol. I think I have the messiest kids in the world!

Have her work only for so long each day., she may burn out soon and you do not want that.

But this is the pace she's setting, lol! If I limit her too much, she begs to do more. We don't spend a lot of time on it, though. She goes through it quickly. I thought she would be burnt out by now, too. But it's been somewhere around 3 months and she still yells "Yaaahhh!" and runs to get her math book when I say it's time for math. Sometimes I wish she would burn out, lol. The kid is crazy!
