Hi! Is anyone by any chance using Math in Focus? I'd looooove to talk to someone about it! I guess I could still ask my question and maybe anyone using Singapore math could answer. We breezed through CH 1 of MIF (Level 3A) but Ch 2 is Mental Math. My son is having a really hard time with it and math is usually one of his better subjects. I looked ahead and the future chapters are things I know he will do fine in. So, it's not like I'm thinking we need to back up to 2B. It's just that the mental math is brand new to him (and me). I don't know how long to keep trying to make all of this stick. It's not like he wouldn't be able to solve the problem if he sees it somewhere. (He just might not be able to do it mentally.) I don't know if we should spend as long as necessary to master the mental math chapter, or just do our best and move on! Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!! Oh, if it helps, we had been doing abeka up to this point. (K4-2nd Grade) Sorry to write a book. LOL

I'm not a Singapore user but as a rule, I do think mental math is very important. I don't think it has to be a mastery thing in one chapter, so to speak, but as an ongoing drill. It should not be something that is fraught with tears. I would suggest using some time each morning as "memory work" time and give him some mental math problems to work on. Then, move on to the next lesson. HTH
