I'm looking for some story books to introduce history - something written to a Kindergarten-2nd grade listening level. I prefer stories that have a Christian world view, if possible (I like the American Girl Doll stories - although they're slightly older than what I'm looking for - but they omit/hide Christian facts : (

What titles did your kids like when they were first starting out? Any particular authors/publishers?

Thanks : )

This is what I used as a read aloud with my youngest, its online and free. I just copied out chapter by chapter. Its listed for Year 2, comparable 2nd grade. We also borrowed D'Aulaire books from the library, she loved the pictures.

Thanks, Briva. That looks like a good spine/text to use in a few years (Ohio requires us to list a textbook for each subject - like everyone teaches that way  ) It looks like it will be great fun when we get there : )

For now, I'm looking for something more elementary - more like what PUBLIC schools consider K-2 ;) And, leaning toward the K.

We used Abeka readers. I wish I could remember the exact titles but it's been a while.

I definitely don't recommend American Girls. I was astonished when I read those to my girls way back when. The stories have the girls disobeying their parents and exhibiting other characteristics that I don't think are good to teach kids.

We really enjoyed Stories of Great Americans for Little Americans. See the review here:

Thanks, Martha! I think I'll check that out : ) Your review sounds like *exactly* what I'm looking for.

I read one of the American Girl ones one day at the library (one of the Addy series). It was very well written, and a compelling read - I see what draws young girls to them.

It didn't have any of the poor character traits you mentioned. Glad you warned me.

BUT, in the historical notes at the end, it told of the Spiritual lives of the American Slaves - and it was just plain inaccurate - covered up the Christian history - which I found rather disturbing. Where do they suppose all those great hymns came from, if the Slaves of America weren't largely devout Christians?

I would love to find some similar books (in a couple of years - we're not ready yet) written by Christian authors, with a Christian perspective.

But, to start, your recommendation sounds perfect!

And, Tory, I'll keep the Abeka ones in mind if I find a used curriculum sale. For now, I'm working with library resources, but in time might want to branch out to fancier stuff. Thanks for the recommendation : )
