With thyroid/adrenal disfunction I've become sensitive to chemicals & fragrances. I was searching for a shampoo made with essential oils, but all that I found either had alot of chemicals and preservatives in them or aloe vera---aloe has latex in it and I have a latex allergy. I decided to make my own shampoo. When I looked up some "receipes" I found some required Castile soap. I dídn't even know what it was until I used trusty Google. The original was made only of olive oil, while today coconut, hemp, and other oils are used with it or inplace of it. I checked out the website. They do use lye. "Saponified" is industry jargon for "reacted with lye"

And, in the page on how they make it, they spell out that they use lye.

I'm not sure it's possible to make soap as we know it without lye.

How about the no poo shampoo.
Apply baking soda to your roots where it is more dirty and oily let it set for a while , then rinse with vinegar and water and then rinse thoroughly.
Martha may have a better way of doing it. I think she is doing it now.

Yes, they use lye--and then it is CHEMICALLY CHANGED via saponification.
This is a wonderful chemistry lesson on how substances are COMPLETELY CHANGED during a chemical reaction.

We have made homemade soap with lye and at first I was afraid of the idea because we know that lye is scary. ;) The soap is so mild though, and I am now no longer afraid of saponification. :D

Would love a homemade shampoo that actually works. Let me know how yours works.

I LOVE cold-processed soaps! Haven't made them in awhile. Need to get some more supplies and whip up a batch. Thx for reminding me, Pam!

Anna, you are right. I didn't realize what saponiated meant :oops:

I did find this explanation about it:

"Lye, also known as sodium hydroxide, is combined with fats to create soap. This process is known as saponification, and once it is complete, the lye is used up and there is none left. Superfatting the soap by adding extra oils insures that the lye is used up."

Hi Linda,

I do use the vinegar as a rinse (makes the hair nice and shiny), but I'm not using baking soda because it makes the scalp too base. I wish I had realized that castile soap is also very base; I already ordered some. :-/

and here I thought saponified meant soap-ified.

I have been using the baking soda (paste with water) and vinegar (with water) rinse for awhile now. I have long tresses and its mostly saltly with a little pepper and I get older ladies telling me all the time what do you use on your hair? When I tell them I get the oddest looks, but they agree that all the 'new' stuff out now is mostly harmful chemicals and I am proof that old ways are better.
