Well, I came across some more chestnuts, these were "Italian" chestnuts at $8 a lb!

I did ask the girl at the coop if she knew where I might find chestnuts now that they're going out of season and she mentioned finding a neighborhood with chestnut trees!

I bo't the $8 Italian chestnuts and today I made the soup. I like it! :) Not quite sure it's worth the work of peeling those nuts, tho'! I priced canned ones online. :?

Still, now that I've used them I think I may use them again if I find them at a good price (or free from the trees!). Peeling them did tear up my skin a bit. :(

I googled and see that there are some WEIRDLY high prices out there - but also there are these reasonable ones. I have no idea why the prices vary so widely?

They do seem reasonable until you realize there's only SIX nuts in them! LOL I'd need at least 3 bags for the soup. That's $10 plus s&h?

Perhaps you should look at this as an "in season only" sort of soup? :ugeek:

Exactly how much does your recipe call for? I mean, chestnuts are kinda big - it seems like 6 of them would be a cup?

I wonder if you could sub all or part. I have to admit to being most intrigued by "Chufa" as a substitute : )

I was thinking of using hazelnuts but, honestly, chestnuts are a different animal. I'm not sure "real" nuts would work in this soup. Might be worth a try, tho', since they're a lot cheaper.

Well - Chufa "nuts" are also not-nuts - that's why I thot they might work : ) The links say they taste like chestnuts, but are a tuber. They can also be foraged - tho I don't have the confidence to do such a thing myself!

And, if you sub real nuts for Chestnuts, the fat level goes thru the roof, too : (

I googled it - I'd never heard of Chufas before! Apparently tho eaten is Latin America, here in the US they're mainly acquired to attract turkeys for hunting. Go figure!

The link I put above (Mother Earth News) actually tells you how to forage them! But, they're also purchasable "online" : )

I'm not saying Id actually do it myself, only that I'm intrigued by the possibilities : )

Once you take the shell off they're not that big. I think 6 might make 1/2 a cup. ?
