Nice discovery this AM. I often have brown rice & fruit for breakfast. I was running low on prepared brown rice & didn't want to wait for more to cook. So, I mixed 1/2 & 1/2 prepared calrose white rice & prepared long grain brown, and nuked them together. I found that it TASTED like white rice : ) Nice to know if you want to eat more brown rice, but prefer eating white.

I looked for short grain rice at the store yesterday and they don't sell it. Just medium and long grain. Weird! I'm glad they have plans to expand this store because their selection stinks!

I've been to stores like that too, Lisa. Thank goodness our Kroger expanded a couple of years ago.

It IS a specialty product. Asian groceries are a good bet if your grocery doesn't carry it.

Pam- really? I love brown rice. Some things are harder for me to get use to but brown rice hasn't been one of them.

Pam, try different ways of cooking it. I am currently boiling it in water like pasta and then straining it. You can also "toast" it before cooking it. But, if you don't like it, you don't like it and I'm sure you'll still live a long and healthy life. :P

They do not sell short grain rice in our area either Lisa! I have a friend who moved here from CA and she hates that this is one thing you simply cannot buy here in VA.

I didn't know it was a specialty item. I wonder why that is, when the other one's aren't. I thought rice was just rice.

I'm not sure. I didn't think there was a difference either. One thing I haven't done is google it. Maybe I'll do that and see if I can figure out why this is.

It is assumed by retailers that Americans prefer a fluffy grain that does not stick together. Indeed, a lot of Americans assume that sticky rice is bad (which, if your long grain is sticky, you DID ruin it!)

Short grain rice sticks together when it is properly prepared - it is much easier to pick up with chopsticks.
