I cannot read more than the first 2 paragraphs. And I will agree that good quality frozen foods are a great way to get good quality veggies. However, I will still promote local farmers markets. i like to know where and how my food as produced. Even if it is not labeled "organic". That label is for big farmers as the process is over $10,000 to get certified. And I don't care i he thinks I am elitist. So be it. I can be a one per center on my $31,000 a year for 2 people! I always buy local, natural, oor organic if I am feeding something to my granddaughters. You bet I am elitist when I am feeding their precious little bodies.

I'm not a dr. Oz fan - I don't even have a TV to watch him on!
I cannot read the content either. I DO buy good stuff for my family (seldom always organic) - and I DO think that frozen veggies are great! But, I buy things like out of season strawberries that are too pricey sometimes.
On the elitist point - maybe he has a point. I have noticed precious little organic food donated to the food pantries & the poor. If we want the best for ourselves, it is also good to share the best with others.
I have a friend who grew up quite poor, and shared with me how the "food baskets" they received as charity were always the worst-of-the-worst food - both tastewise and nutritionally.
The first time I visited a local pantry, I remember saying that the food looked like the donors were trying to punish poor people for being poor!
When we donate food - we need to try to donate out of *love*
Poor kids also like to look in the grocery bag and see yummy food (which sometimes means *unhealthy* food!) just like our own kids do.

My freezer is full of frozen veggies. Look who he is associated with Oprah W. Have you seen her lately, saw her getting an award for something and she is fat fat fat.

Kysa, that's how we are. We raise most of our food, freeze or can it for later, oftentimes, dehydrating as well, depending on the food item. I make sprouts all winter to give me a sense of "gardening". We are preparing to make a greenhouse out of some sliding glass doors my hubby got off a job, and some left over steel square piping we've had laying around here for many years for livestock fencing.
We raise our own pesticide free fruit and give quite a bit to the local food pantry, or local homeschoolers in need. I'm excited to see how far I can stretch our food budget by implementing a little elbow grease into the growing process of non-certified organic foods from our land.
We're considering raising some of our own beef and chickens, too, but with hay prices on the rise, beef isn't very reasonable. Thankfully, we have a rancher as a client who will often trade organic meat for my hubby's work.
Flash Frozen is better than canned, but I have limited freezer space, so I often dehydrate tomatoes, spices, and other veggies to put in canning jars.

My son (Farmers Market seller) does donate his vegetables to the local food pantry. And they take them, but prefer packaged foods with a longer shelf life. What the food pantry doesn't want, goes to the Local Teen Challenge. And they will take all the fresh veggies they can get.

I can't even find a food bank around here. I've been told there is one and told where it is... but I can't find it. I'd like to go see what they have and how it works. After spending so much at the store the last 2 times I might be ready for some of that kind of help myself!

If you need local help and can't find it, try calling the United Way. They usually act as a referral service for other agencies.
And, if you need help and feel bad about accepting it, you could offer to do some volunteer hours to "pay back" - many pantries do that : )

Just caught a snippet of the article (full article for subscribers only). It does seem Oz may be going politically correct, to 'educate' us about eating. In socialist countries, feeding the masses is not a priority, and it will be like that here very soon. I actually expected the ration cards 4yrs ago. I have already seen grocers who lack variety in sizes, brands of food stuff. Our local store 'remodeled' last year. It took out the fresh fish section, now we only get frozen. The produce section got turned around and flashy, but they are carrying LESS produce and LESS variety, and yes the organic stuff is gone. Ladies in my crochet circle call it a food stamp store, lots of those items you can buy on food stamps (maybe our future ration cards).

http://www.junglejims.com/index.aspThe above store has us massively spoiled with variety! I bring tourists there as the #1 tourist attraction (really, one of the best tourist attractions I've seen anywhere - not just locally). They have 1400 kinds of cheese alone! It's the pet project of one local man : )
