Question regarding vegetarians... What do you think is a % of vegetarians who focus on eating fruits, veggies, nuts... and not processed foods? Most of the vegetarians I know are all about chips, baked goods, candy, soda... It just seems odd that so many won't eat meat because of considered health benefits (not referring to those who don't because of cruelty issues...) but fill up on the junk foods. Seems counter productive.
Just something that goes through my mind when I see it happening. I could almost be vegetarian - but I really do like meat and feel good when I eat it. When I stop feeling good from it, I will eliminate it.
I know EXACTLY what you mean, Pam! This is *especially* prevalent among teen vegetarians. I refer to them as Hagen-Daaz-and-Cheese-Pizza-vegetarians! I used to be one, so I know.
It is my observation, tho, that this sort of so-called vegetarian doesn't stay that way for decades. They either return to eating meat (or, in some cases regularly DO eat meat that they like, only claim to be vegetarian when they don't *want* the kind of meat being offered. Like the young adult I know who calls herself vegetarian, but eats Pepperoni Pizza!), or else, they become interested enough in vegetarianism to really research it, and find out how to eat a better diet in the long term (like I did).
My Mom used to say that "greasy, salty potato chips" really made her feel good! I'm not sure we can always "trust our bodies" to give us the best nutritional advice. There are all sorts of aspects to feeling good, and sometimes it is hard to differentiate which ones are making us more healthy in the long run.
But, having said, that, It's not my mission in life to change omnivores - it's completely up to each person how they choose to eat.
