In setting up my new pedometer I discovered that I cover 19 feet in 10 steps.

There are 5280 feet in a mile.

10,000 feet is a bit less than 2 miles. But 10,000 STEPS = ???

So, I would multiply the 19 feet by ? Can't quite get there. sigh

Sis, it's just too early in the morning for my brain to be working. I will have to think about this one later...like maybe after another 2 or 3 cups of coffee!

I think it's 5580 divided by 19 times 10 = 2779 steps-per-mile-if-you're-Sis

I welcome corrections from the more math-adept out there.

Thank you, Scott. Although - full disclosure - my calculator got the *math* right - I only did the formula : )

Thanks Anna! :) So simple and so difficult! Now, I have another question. I know these are guidelines so.... we have to have the mindset of "just doing something", right? And then increase the amount, right? Because if *I* walk 2779 steps and say Mr. 6' tall walks 2779 steps - he will have gone much further than I have! But has he worked any harder? Ultimately, MY 1 mile is more than his 1 mile, in terms of exercise. I need to walk 3.5 miles to get in 10,000 steps. That seems like a lot but two 30 minute sessions and then regular daily steps should get it there. (I'm thinking out loud here.) ;-)

Lots of variables there. If DH weighs more, his body is doing the work of carrying more weight. His muscles might have more muscle bulk to move. His metabolism might be higher (for males that is generally the case) - so he is actully burning more energy when doing the same amount of "work" -Steps - as you.

I think it's comparing apples & oranges. I'll bet there are some exercise physiologists who've done PhD's on this topic!

LOL! Ok - I'll give you that. I was just considering stride length and using a 6' man's stride to my puny stride.
