My mom has rheumatoid arthritis and is taking a couple medications for it. She is interested in trying natural remedies. Does anyone know of any?

I haven't read these exact articles, but McDougall's diet has helped a lot of people with RA (also, I noticed there's an article here on Gout for those who are interested)

My mom started having trouble with arthritis in her hands and when she went on McDougall it went away. She has very nice hands for 80's.

Is that the diet where you don't eat any animal products? She would rather stick with her medication than do that, lol!

That's it! My Mom was the same way, so I understand.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any herbs, etc, that provide a quick fix (tho I haven't researched it). A McDougall type diet is the only thing I know that really fixes it for some people.

My aunt has RA, and has really done very well taking steroids for about 40 years now - the medical route works okay for some people.

Do you know the reason that diet helps? Is there something about animal products that causes inflammation? She said she has a list somewhere of foods she should/shouldn't eat, but I don't think she's followed it, lol.

My MIL also has it and just started getting shots for it. They have tried getting my mom to do the shots because her meds work good, but could work better, but she doesn't want to do that yet.

Yes, animal products cause inflammation in a lot of people.

(Unfortunately, some of us -like me- can go off animal products and STILL have high cholesterol & inflammation.)

But, for a very high percentage of people, getting off animal products & oils/added fats does the trick.

When I went on it a few years ago I stayed a vegetarian afterwards. I cannot eat meat, I make me sick now.
I am using celery seed pills for my gout and so far so good. I donot know if it would work for arthritis or not.

I have an older friend (mid 70's) who has arthritis (not RA) and has especially experienced pain in her shoulders. She read something....somewhere....about foods that heal. Her husband had recently passed away, so she decided to give this new eating plan 100%.

The arthritis is not gone, but she is pain-free, which has been such a huge blessing for her. I will try to list the foods that she does not eat, as well as some of the foods that she does eat.

OFF LIMITS
sugar
white flour (it is possible that wheat is off limits, but I am not sure about this)
red meat
pork
caffeine
nightshade veggies (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant)
no dairy
I'm not sure about eggs, but probably not
no "white" foods....potatoes, rice, flour


She eats a LOT of fresh pineapple....at least 3 a week - fresh pineapple is good for pain

she eats some chicken and turkey and mostly fish (especially wild salmon)
brown rice, oats and other whole grains are good.
And of course, lots of fresh veggies (except for those in the nightshade family)

I think she uses mostly olive oil...maybe exclusively but I'm not sure
She buys local honey and uses it exclusively for sweetening

There's probably more, but this is what I can remember.
