I have two shelves with four shelves each on them.
I have my canned goods pasta, flour, syrup, soups etc there.
I have been checking out emergency preparedness sites and I think I will order
freeze dried, peas, sliced potatoes, apples, gravy mix, mashed potatoes, carrots, instant milk. Stuff that would disappear from a grocery shelf quickly.
These come in cans not the prepackaged sealed for 50 yrs stuff. It would last us 3 to 4 months.
and then add to it every so many months.
I am not being greedy just do not want to have to deal with a grocery store and people grabbing stuff , etc.
I have stocked up on chewing gum also, I have a large supply of toilet paper and dish soap in the garage. Need to start adding to that.
Once we have our air thing replaced in October I will be better able to work my budget and add more.

I think this is a good idea. It's amazing how quickly shelves at the store get cleared out even when there is a rumor of anything!
We didn't even have Isaac come here, but people were grabbing stuff so fast. It was crazy.
If there ever is an emergency, I'm like you.. I have no desire to be in town battling people for the last roll of tp!

In this day, we really have no idea what will happen with anything. People are losing their minds.
I sometimes worry more about civil unrest than I do natural disasters. Either way, I want to have supplies on hand so we can stay home if we need to, for as long as needed.
It isn't easy to store things up, but I do think it's worth it to have some things on hand and not be so dependent on a grocery store for every little thing.

I really, really want to be able to do this, but so far I've not been able to, hopefully we'll be able to somehow soon though.

How bad do you think small towns would be affected by civil unrest? God has led me away from stockpiling, but I don't think it would be a bad idea to have a few things on hand in case of an emergency. The only natural disasters I would have to worry about here would be tornadoes and fires, though, so it wouldn't do me any good.

I buy extra tuna, mac and cheese, canned veggies, pasta and sauce each pay day. DH and DD eat a lot of fiber bars so I buy a lot of them also. somethings you cannot stock up on, I also buy powdered milk. and flour.

Although we have a large WM and a Target not far away , they are not staying stocked up like they used to. I cannot find things, certain food items that I used to either. right now the shelves are almost half full and it was that way before the hurricane went through the mideast and coast.
They just are not having food delivered as much.
One reason I am buying powdered milk, and eggs, and canned veggies and canned meat.
I am not being greedy or hoarding , just donot want to deal with lines and people panicing if the time ever comes. That is when things get dangerous and it is better to be at home. :(

Small towns run out of supplies just like big cities. If trucks can't make it here to resupply, I don't think what's on the shelves in stores would last long.
If people panic at the first thought of a tropical storm coming, I can only imagine what they'd do if there were riots or whatever in the city close to us. Even if people here aren't rioting, the food would be gone out of the stores in less than a day, I think.

I think there would be a good chance small towns would be heavily impacted if the unrest/emergency were something that drove people out of the big cities. Where would they go? If transportation is affected, no supplies are going to get through to anyone.

It would not just be small towns that would be affected. When we had a bad ice storm the walmart around here was out of food pretty much in a day. It does not take much for the shelves to be empty. They are half empty now around here. Bread , milk, eggs, boxed food canned food around here is barely on the shelves, and they say that the trucks are not delivering as much as they were before. Something sounds fishy to me.
I buy extra food that will not spoil every payday. So if we cannot get out and I do not want to be in lines with crazy people , we have food to last us a week or more. It is not hoarding it is being prepared and God does tell us to be prepared.
