Post subject:  Mexican Recipe Advice?

I've got a question for y'all:

When I go out for Mexican food at a family chain in Ohio, they have a Bean Burrito with a lovely red sauce over it. The sauce has a very mild flavor, mostly smooth with bits of onions and maybe some other veggies (green peppers?). It's not hot. It's not excessively acidic - even the tomato flavor seems more mild than, say, spaghetti sauce. There's no noticeable cumin flavor.

When I purchase Mexican sauces at the grocery - they have "Enchilada" (which is just all wrong for this recipe) and "Salsa" (again - not even close). I've tried making a variety of recipes for Mexican sauces, but most of them are WAYY heavily spiced compared to the restaurant's lovely sauce. The local restaurant, while good, doesn't do the burrito sauce as well as the Ohio restaurant does.

Any ideas on where to find a recipe that would mimic what I get at the restaurant?

It's a chili powder type sauce. Chili powder spice isn't as hot as cayenne pepper. Try Taco bell mild sauce in the tall jar. When I make my own from scratch (wink, wink) refried beans I cook the beans and add their short jar taco sauce with a little salt and that is it. 2 cups dry beans for one jar.

Thanks, Briva - but I don't think that's the one I'm looking for : (

I'm pretty sure that the restaurant makes theirs from scratch - but I don't think there's *any* chili powder -even the mildest - in it. I've had the Mild Sauce at Taco Bell & it doesn't seem the same.

This restaurant's sauce doesn't taste like anything else that goes by the name of "Mexican" in the U.S. I don't know if that's because it is SO authentic that I've never seen it anywhere else, or if that's because it's really not Mexican at all, but perhaps Spanish, or Panamanian - or who knows? (I'm certainly not an expert in this field!!!)

Any other ideas?

. . .I do like your "scratch" refried beans idea, tho : )

Ortega taco sauce, original. Look it up and see if you can find the ingredients. It's what I use on bean burritos because it doesnt taste like any other sauce to me.
