I just went through my loose recipes and gathered together my soup recipes. Finally! yay But, it bro't up a question. Is chili "soup"? Is stew "soup"? Are the soupy recipes we put over rice "soup"? It doesn't *really* matter, I suppose. I read that Beef Bourguignon is a "classic French soup"! I would think it's a stew (but I didn't even think to add it to my list of soups). Soups with a "gravy" seem like stew but then, are soups with white sauce also stews? Ah well. Can't wait to start having soups more regular again! |

In Spanish we have more words than just soup and stews, there is Potaje, guisado, sopa, sopon, caldo, sancocho, estofao, asopao. For me, if you have to use a spoon to eat it and its chunky, its a stew, if its creamy, watery or has small vegetables its a soup. One of those Spanish words is for broth, so there is another name in English for something you eat with a spoon. |

When DD was younger, she defined "Soup" as anything you could make in the Dutch Oven (which covers most of what I make! ) She LOVES "soup" btw : ) OTOH, the first time BIL met me, we were having Greek Fasolia (Bean Soup/stew like this http://stuffedveggies.blogspot.com/2012 ... achni.html ) and I referred to it as "Soup." He was momentarily concerned that I was insulting the cooking! |
