Homemade Natural Bug Spray Recipe Ingredients 3 1 ⁄2 ounces (which is basically 1/3 cup) of Witch Hazel 1 ⁄2 teaspoon Lemongrass Oil 1 ⁄ 2 teaspoon Eucalyptus Oil 1 ⁄ 2 teaspoon Citronella Oil Directions Combine all ingredients in a small four-once spray bottle When you use it, be sure to shake the bottle contents before spraying (the oils separates from the witch hazel) p.s. It smells divine!

Sounds like it smells lovely! Is it for human or household use?

Well Anna, I was assuming human use. Like in the place of deet products. I'll have to check.

I went to the health food store to buy the stuff. All three oils were a little expensive. But, the lady who worked there said her Mom makes it with just Citronella & Lemongrass. She didn't know her Mom's measurements, so I decided to make it a little extra strong to compensate for the missing third oil.
So: this is what I'm trying
2 oz Witch hazel 1/2 tsp Lemongrass Oil (50 drops) 1/2 tsp Citronella Oil (50 drops)
We wore it to the park today, and didn't even see any mosquitos (usually they have some). Got home & showered - got two bites this eve. Put it back on.
I'll keep trying it, and should have feedback soon as to how its working - as we usually encounter a fair number of mosquitos here.

I know I seem to get covered no matter what I use but I have not used this. I wonder how often you have to reapply?

Oh and yes these oils are expensive. I have purchased a few oils to help with sinuses. I need one of those diffusers.

We put it on last evening, and the scent dissipated after an hour or two. I think I would reapply whenever the scent seems to be gone. But, if it works, it's way better in my mind, than bathing in deet every time you go out all summer. I don't mind once in a while, but I don't want to be permanently coated in a toxin.

Just heard on a radio show today, 2 pints of water in a spray bottle with 1 tbsp of vanilla extract. A gardener says he wasnt bothered by the mosquitos at all and smelled really nice.

ooooo now that sounds really easy and very pleasant. It seems almost to me though like the vanilla would attract them? Hmmm
