Post subject:  Question about homemade laundry detergents

My girls have sensitive skin. I use mainly All Free and Clear because detergents like the less expensive brands Purex ect break them out. I have to be careful. I was just wondering if the homemade stuff is hard on the skin or the opposite?

Well, you could try the recipe for dry laundry detergent that is posted above. And you could try out different soaps to see which ones your girls can tolerate. Ivory works well. Or you could try Fels Naptha. Or Kirk's Castille (which I looked for, but couldn't find) or Dr. Bronner's bar soap (also a castille soap and it is organic, too, so it may work very well).

I know I made some using some Fels Naptha and my clothes have never smelled better. They were so soft too.

You may also try putting a cup of white vinegar in your rinse water. This helps to remove soap/detergent residue from your clothes (and also from your washing machine!)

Thank Laurajean. I had never heard that about the white vinegar before. I may look into this in the fall if I have more time to experiment. :)

White vinegar is great!! I use it to clean out my coffee pot, too. But it is good for your washing machine, especially if you have hard water. I try to add some to a wash load every now and then - when I think about it! About once a month, if I remember! - I will add a gallon of vinegar and just run it through the rinse cycle (no clothes) on a small load.

Well that sounds easy enough. I know my washer has some build up. It'd be easy for me to run white vinegar through it. Oh-another question about the homemade laundry detergents, do you not use a fabric softener?

Vinegar "softens" clothes, but is not an anti-static agent.

Commercial fabric softeners are optional - as with any detergent you would choose to use.

But for those of you who make your own you opt not to use fabric softeners right?

I make the liquid. I use just a tad of fabric softener on our dress clothes and sheets. I fluff on air in the dryer for a few minutes then hang dress clothes on hangers to dry on a rod in the laundry room and have no problem with wrinkles that way. I hang other laundry on drying racks and rarely use the dryer.

I have no where to hang so I must use the dryer. I really like Downy but it is so expensive. I was just wondering how strong the smell is if you use just the homemade detergents?

What do you mean by "how strong the smell is"? what smell? The clothes come out of the wash smelling clean, and faintly of whatever soap you used.

I use fabric softener because, like you, I have no place to hang clothes- and to be honest, I wouldn't do it if I did. I wear enough synthetics that I need a fabric softener to reduce static.

(And I don't always make my own detergent, just sometimes)
