How much does a batch generally cost you when you make it? And how long does it last? What do you keep it in? How much do you make at once?

I'd guess about $1.75. (Kirk's castille is a little over $1 a bar. Washing soda & Borax each run between $3&$4 for a big box)
About 16 washer loads.
A plastic container with a screwtop lid - a ziploc or tupperware would also work.
2 cups.

I always make a double batch, since I have all the stuff out and tend to make a mess.

I use 2 TBS for most loads, but for smaller loads I will cut it in half and just use 1 TBS. I get between 30-40 uses for a double batch. It doesn't cost that much, depending on the kind of soap you use.

Are any of these soaps you folks mentioned fragrance free? I have massive fragrance allergies, and Fels Naptha kills me. Maybe I could use a bath soap bar that is fragrance free? I'm ready to switch since the All detergent I'm using doesn't do that great a job.

I make mine with a bar of Ivory lots of times and it cleans well. Don't know if that fragrance bothers you or not. I have heard using a bar of Zote works well too but I've never used that so don't know what kind of fragrance it has.

What kind of soap do you use in the shower? Maybe you could try grating that and making a small batch of detergent and see how it works.

Editing to add that after the laundry dries, you really don't smell the fragrance of the detergent much at all. So if you could get through the making it part (or get your kids to do that part!), it might not bother you once it is dry. I make the liquid and it doesn't smell as strongly as the dry, at least to me.

Maybe try a bar of Dr. Bronner's castile Baby Mild soap. It's fragrance-free. I stopped using homemade laundry detergent because it didn't seem to do well with our poor quality well water. I use Seventh Generation fragrance-free liquid.

Yes, tkdmom is right - Bronners scent-free castille bar is a good choice (I didn't realize their baby-bar was fragrance free). I don't use Bronners because Kirks is also a vegan castille soap, and much cheaper - and locally made, too : ). But Kirk's does have a mild, pleasant fragrance. If fragrance-free is better for you, any fragrance-free castille should work for you (I don't know if ANY bath soap would work - I've heard only fels-naphtha & castille).
