Assuming you've made butter with your cows milk, & wondering what your method is.
Do I have to leave my milk out overnight so cream can separate first?
Dd, tried an experiment she got, off u tube; we got some heavy cream from our local dairy, put some in a canning jar, & shook the daylights out of it, till we got butter!
Fun & yummy!
Now we have the real milk & want to give it a go. (raw)

We have tried skimming but it only works so-so. Dd wanted a cream separator for a birthday/Christmas combo gift, and we imported one from Ukraine -- the only place they are available. However, we can't get the crazy thing to work. I'm not sure if we don't have it put together right or what. The other deal is that it takes SO much cream to make butter. Anyway, to make it, we just stick it in the food processor and blend till it is creamy. :0)

If you're looking for traditional equipment, Lehman's has it http://non-electric.lehmans.com/search#w=cream

(though they aren't known for their bargain basement prices)

Mom had good luck using a turkey baster to skim off cream- super cheap, and fairly easy to do once you get the knack of getting just the cream without too much milk coming along. I did it for her many times.

Thanks, Anna.. I'm going to try this. The friend that gave me the hummus also gave me some heavy cream! Dd asked what we'd use it for.. now I can tell her we are going to make butter.

We did it like that in a science experiment years ago. It was good.
