I have some friends who are going thru the long power-out because of hurricaine Sandy and have an infant at home. They other day they told me they bought a turkey fryer (one of the propane ones) - not to fry a turkey in, but to boil water in!

I thought it was a great idea! Especially if you find one in the after-Thanksgiving clearance to keep on hand for such times.

We did that in hurricane Irene here last year. Mine is not a turkey fryer but a similar type propane burner. Put my iron skillet or dutch oven on it and cooked, made coffee, etc. They are very handy to have. You can use it for canning too and it keeps the heat out of the kitchen.
