Last month, we were running low on diswasher detergent, so I started using only a few tablespoons full in the cycle...
AND because my septic tank isn't what it should be, I began to use only the "short" wash cycle.
The dishes came out just as clean!! It also saves money on detergent and electricity. Now, I never run it on a full cycle anymore and I never use both cups that are in the door of the washer. I only use one and never fill it up all the way.

We figured this out when we were almost out of dishwasher soap, too...
Haven't filled the cup for quite some time, and our dishwasher soap lasts forever now.
Haven't tried the short wash cycle. We don't even have a short wash, I don't think. Heading to go look now. ; )

Perhaps we should try that. DH used to use 1/2 the soap when he was a bachelor. Our only problem is that our dishwasher isn't very good - period- no matter how much soap we use, what kind we use, or how long we run it : (

Anna, our dishwasher isn't very good, either, in fact, I'd prefer hand-washing our dishes since I have to "pre-wash" our dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. We also have very hard water and cutting back the dishwasher soap still allows the glasses to come out clear and spot free. :)

Last night, I had Little One (my official dishwasher-starter!) put it on "Light Load" today, I put them away, having forgotten all about it. Never noticed any difference!

We have hard water, too, but not nearly as hard as what I had before. Used to be if we boiled a pot of water, a white film would form all over the inside of the pot, and all over the top of the water - just from minerals! Our water softener didn't even have a *setting* for our level of water-hardness.

Here's a good "recipe" for dishwasher detergent....1 TBsp baking soda, and 1 TBsp borax. It works great. Or you can just mix equal parts baking soda and borax and just add 2 TBsp to your dishwasher when you are ready to do a load.

I have never put soap in both of the soap dispensers. It's really not necessary. Also to clean your dishwasher every month or so, pour in a 16 oz bottle of apple cider vinegar and run through the rinse cycle. I usually add glasses and other dishes that have developed spots. This does a great job.

And we have VERY hard water!
