I *think* I've got it!
I didn't want to go buy febreeze, because it's not cheap. But, I had some Dryel on hand from when I needed such things for "work clothes." (My new work clothes are all washable! ; )
I unfolded a sheet of Dryel and put it inside the suitcase and closed it for a few days. It seems to have fixed it! (I will give a little more time to see if the smell returns)

Truck drivers use fresh coffee grounds to get the smell out of their trailers after they haul seafood, chicken or something else smelly. A friend recently used coffee to get the burnt popcorn smell out of her microwave. Maybe give that a try. Just put some in a cup and put inside?

Thanks, Angie. Actually, the Dryel fixed THIS problem, but I'll keep it in my (leaky) mental archives for next time.
the microwave thing is good to know - I've known Microwaves to be permanently ruined by burned popcorn.
